It’s officially mid-summer, which means the contest season is well under way, and what a season it has been so far! The spring and early summer have seen Canadian skateboarders lighting up events across the globe.
We kicked things off in May with the Damn Am in Houston, Texas where Toronto local Chris Setinas found the third spot on the podium.
Next was the World Skate Tour in Ostia, Rome where Canadian park skaters Zoe Zollinger and Sadie Demil both made their international debut and Fay De Fazio Evert, Kaede Fraser and Oli Ward made their return to the international stage.
We then followed Olympic veteran Cordano Russell to Salt Lake City for XGames where he was just shy of the podium with a fourth place finish.
The Canadian contests were next, starting with everyone’s favourite “Nontest” in Toronto, Hoedown at the Hoof. This contest is a celebration of bowl skateboarding - a community jam that is for the people by the people. The turn out was amazing, as per usual, and it was a great example of the caliber of park skateboarding we have here in Canada.
Next up was Beat The Heat in Medicine Hat, Alberta that took place on July 1st. This contest is Canada’s biggest amateur skate competition, with an equal prize purse for both men and women. The contest was sanctioned by Canada Skateboard, earning skaters National ranking points based on their performance. Evie Pritchard took home first place in the Women’s Street Open while Jayson Guenther landed first place in the Men’s division for the third time in a row!
Jackalope came to follow - another National point earning event, located in Mississauga, Ontario. The contest saw skaters from all over the world with competitions in various disciplines, including street and vert. Toronto skater Angel Suh took first place in the Groms Street division, and National Team rider and contest mainstay Micky Papa stole the show on the street course and came in first place, making him a back to back champion for this contest.
The contest season is far from over, with various Canadian events coming down the pipeline to provide skaters with the opportunity to compete, earn points and gather in community. Here’s what’s next:
Tuff City Skate Contest | Tofino Skatepark | Tofino, BC | July 19th
Super Bowl Showdown | Stefan Wenek Skatepark | Ottawa, ON | August 2nd
Competition De Skateboard Du Central | Parc Central | Gatineau, QC | August 2nd
Railside Skateboard Jam | Railside Skatepark | Port Coquitlam, BC | August 9th
Topaz Thrash II | Topaz Skatepark | Victoria, BC | August 30th
Rankings will be updated with new event results in the coming weeks. You can find them here.
We are excited to see the contest scene alive and well this year, and are working hard behind the scenes to bring the Canada Skateboard Open series back in 2026. Stay tuned for updates.
